GREETINGS:
Having those extra holidays after the New Year, along with the mild weather certainly made the month of January zoom by. Wasn't that great!
REMINDER: EARLY DISMISSAL---- Friday, February 16/01
`Please remember that your children will be coming home EARLY.
Dismissal Time: 2:10 p.m.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
Our students are being kept active outdoors enjoying the fresh air, sliding on the hills with Krazy carpets. Constructing snow forts out of snow blocks is also occupying the creative minds of a number of our students as well. Box hockey, although quite popular, has been put away because in their enthusiasm, students were getting sticks too high. Grade 5 & 6 students are involved in Monday noon skating at the arena.
In addition, we also offer noon hour intra-murals for grades 1 - 6. Each grade has their turn on the corresponding day of the cycle. e.g. Day 2 - grade 2.
REMINDER: Tuesday nights are Family Activity nights in the gym. Children must be accompanied by their parents. ( Feb. 6,13, 20,27, Mar. 6,13,20)
FIELD TRIP SUBSIDY:
Our ACSL, through the sale of hot dogs, will be providing $150/grade level to offset field trip expenses. We would like to thank them for this contribution. Special thanks to parent volunteer, Terri Dyck for coordinating the Friday hot dog lunch and her group of volunteers for preparing the food.
READING:
Every week is I Love to Read Week at Carman Elementary.
Teachers have Home Reading Programs, Partner Reading (students in the upper
grades are partnered with students in the lower grades and they share stories
reading to one another), Reading Challenges, and reading is a primary focus
in the classroom on a daily basis. A number of classes are taking part
in the Mr. Christie Reading program in which we are competing with other
school across the country to see how may books we can read as a school
in a 4 week period.
However, we have designated a week to highlight
reading.
"I Love to Read Week" Theme: " Plant A Seed, Read"
We have designated Feb. 12 – 16 as our "I Love
to Read Week". To kick off the week, there will be an assembly on Monday,
Feb. 12 followed by a guest reader, The Honourable Lt. Governor Peter M.
Liba. His Honour will be reading a story to our grade 1&2s followed
by another reading to our group of grade 3&4s. We expect his Honour
to be at Carman Elementary from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The readings will take
place in the music room.
Tuesday and Wednesday have been slated, " STOP,
DROP AND READ" days where everyone will carry a book with them throughout
the day. Upon hearing the Stop Drop and Read signal everyone in the school
will just do that, stop what they are doing and read a book for 5 minutes.
Thursday features a Teacher Read Aloud Swap where
teachers will swap classes and read a story during USSR time 1:00 – 1:15
PM.
The week prior to this week, all students will
be choosing a favourite book and entering information about the book on
a book-shape cutout. These summaries will be on display throughout the
school.
Friday, which is Early Dismissal and Spirit Day
will feature students being paired up to read/write/illustrate a picture
book. The completed works will be displayed throughout the school as well.
"I Love to Read Week" should be a fun week for
everyone. Parents, you can help out by getting involved in reading. Ask
your children to share their books and stories with you. "PLANT A SEED,
READ" ( Watch for Ben Wicks' booklet on Born to Read that is being distributed
gr.1-3.)
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
February 12 –16 is designated as Teacher Appreciation Week in the province of Manitoba. If you think of it, send a little note to your child’s teacher. Our teachers spend a lot of time with your children teaching them a multitude of skills. I know that you appreciate their efforts, so tell them. When a person is acknowledged for their efforts, it’s very motivating.
FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT- Mrs. Broeska
First of all I would like to thank all of the
grade 3 & 4 parents for their cooperative spirit in getting the grade
3&4 Christmas musicals rescheduled not once, but twice. Making telephone
calls to people like you was a pleasure.
The grade 4 classes are becoming very knowledgeable
with the instruments of the Orchestra and Beethoven's life and music. We
will be travelling to the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall on Feb. 9 to
hear the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra perform. The bus is leaving C.E. at
8:30 sharp so that we can be on time for the concert.
The grade 3&4 Choir is off to a great start
with a membership of 57 singers. The choir meets at noon recess on day
1 of the school day cycle. We will be singing at the Tempo Festival of
the Arts in April. A big thank you to Mrs. Revel for helping to manage
the choir and Mrs. Kidd for accompanying. Mrs. Kidd, one of our parent
volunteers, has been accompanying our student performances for a number
of years and we really appreciate her time, effort and talent.
A group of grade 5&6s wanted to continue
their choral work after their September to December session of choir "rapped"
up. This group is meeting on day 4 at noon recess. We thank Mrs. Hand for
accompanying this group again this session. We will also be singing at
the Tempo Festival of the Arts.
The grade 5&6 classrooms will be having a
school concert on Wednesday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m. in the
Carman Collegiate Theatre. If you have wondered what the elements of Orff
Music are, please join us as Agent O, Agent R, and Agent double F solve
this mystery. Admission is $1.50/seat or $5.00/family.
Our grade K, 1, and 2 classes will be singing
in concert at the Carman Collegiate Theatre on April 12 in preparation
for their performances at the Tempo Festival of the Arts on April 17 or
18 (choral) and 20 (Orff). Keep a look out for the forth-coming Tempo Festival
schedule.
CARMAN COLLEGIATE DRAMA
Carman Collegiate Drama presents, H.M.S Pinafore on February 22, 23, & 24. The students always put on a great show. If you haven’t attended one of their productions give it a try. Adm.: $6.00 adults, $5.00 children 7:30 PM
NEW PRINCIPAL FALL 2001
A new principal will be appointed for Carman Elementary for the Fall/2001. I have decided to join the ranks of the retired teachers.
Respectfully submitted,
William Bunka
