Parents
to help Co-ordinate Hotdog Program
A call for help from the Parent Advisory Council and
students and
staff of Carman Elementary for volunteer parents to help co-ordinate our school’s hotdog program. We have had hotdogs available to students and staff for a number of years now. Our co-ordinator has stepped down now that her children have reached high school. Many thanks to Terri and all her helpers. We are in need of a parent(s) to purchase the supplies each week and organize volunteers. There are lots of people to help, but it is important to have 1, 2 or 3 parents who can work together to get the hotdogs and buns to the school every Friday and to organize a schedule of workers to cook the “dogs”. This program is very popular with the students, as you can imagine, and raises valuable funds for our Parent Council to support school programs, equipment and activities which we would otherwise have to do without. If you can help, please contact Mary Heard (745-6657) or Michelle Doerksen (745-3970). We thank you and your children thank you!!!

Remembrance
Day Assembly and Poppies
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Friday, November 10/06 at 1:00 p.m. The Royal Canadian Legion and R.C.M.P. will once again participate in this special event. There will also be some meaningful presentations from our students and an excellent new Remembrance Day video to view. It is an important day for us to remember. All parents and community members are welcome.
As well, poppies will again be available at the school for a small donation. We request that a donation of at least $0.25 be made for each poppy to raise funds necessary to support and assist our veterans and ex-service people. These funds are a blessing for the many thousands affected. Covering Poppy costs and showing a profit are essential to the Poppy Campaign.
Welcome
to our New Kindergarten Teacher
It is our pleasure to welcome our new Kindergarten
teacher, Mrs. Jacqueline Caswill, to the staff of CES. Mrs. Caswill takes over
Lisa Goertzen’s K position for the remainder of the 06/07 school year while
she is on Maternity Leave. We will certainly miss Lisa, but are so fortunate to
have Jacqueline teach these eager K’s. She hosted an Open House for her new K
parents on October 11.
We should mention, also, that Lisa had a baby boy,
Liam, on Oct. 14. Amazingly, on the same day, Jolina Leafloor, our resource
teacher also away on Maternity Leave this year, had a baby girl, Hannah. Mothers
and babies are doing just fine.
Bus
Evacuation and Full Scale Fire Drill
On Tuesday, Oct. 24/06, our school had a fire drill that closely resembled the real thing (without the fire). Our Fire Department came to school as they would in a real emergency, while the students and staff evacuated the building and headed for the United Church (our safe place in the event of a real fire or other emergency). The Fire Department entered the building and did the work for which they are trained, checking for anyone remaining in the building and preparing to extinguish a fire.
Thanks to Martin DeWitt and the Carman and Area Fire
Fighters for helping with this very important emergency drill.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25/06, we had a Bus Evacuation
Drill for all classes. This drill is run every year to practice safe and
effective procedures in the event of a bussing incident in which students are
required to get off the bus quickly. Thanks to our Transportation Supervisor and
the 6 drivers assigned to our school.
Reminders
and Requests to/from Parents & Community Members
Picking up children from school: If someone out of the ordinary is
to pick your child/ren up at any time during the school day, please
send a
note to the teacher or phone the school to let us know. This is for the safety
of all children.
Children going to another home after school:
If your child/ren is to go somewhere out of the ordinary after school (eg.
a different bus) please
send a note to the teacher or phone the school to let us know. Please make
these arrangements before hand. Again, this is for the safety of our children.
Congestion at dismissal: At 3:45 p.m. on the south and east
sides of the school (4th Ave. S.W. & 2nd St. S.W.)
there is often significant traffic and pedestrian congestion. It’s a very busy
area at dismissal. Students are leaving to walk, bike or be driven home by car
or bus and these streets are filling with vehicles. There is just not enough
room around the school to park. We request that parents picking up children park
along the south side of the school along 4th Ave. S.W. on either side
of the highway, and that if children are crossing to a vehicle they always do so
at the crosswalk. Parking on the west (buses loading) and east sides of the
school (2nd & 3rd St. S.W.) is not recommended at this
time. Thank you!
North End Bus: North end bus begins morning pick-ups on November 1. If you have any
questions about pick-up points (stops), etc., please contact Division Office
(745-2003).
Extra Mitts for Cold Weather: If you have any gently used mittens at home that you
can spare, please drop them off at school or send them with your children. Drop
them off at the office and we will keep them in a drawer for children to
use and return at recess in cold weather. Unfortunately, not all children wear
proper winter clothing every day for a variety of reasons and require toques,
mitts, etc. to cope with the cold at recess. We hope to be able to provide at
least some mitts for cold hands but we need your help.
UNICEF/06
This year, our UNICEF fundraiser has changed. Instead
of the little orange boxes children took door-to-door on past Hallowe’ens,
this year’s program encourages the children to take home an envelope for the
month of October and to ask family, friends and neighbours to contribute. Your
family will have received the envelope with a letter to parents inside. This is
not intended to be a door-to-door activity. The students all saw a video on how
UNICEF funds would be used this year, to help children get schooling in Malawi,
Africa. The video was, indeed, a real eye opener for students and staff to see
the shocking living conditions in this part of Africa. For instance, well over
½ the population does not attend school past grade 5. Facilities, supplies,
books and transportation are very poor or non-existent. Your help filling the
UNICEF envelopes will, indeed, make a difference in the lives of many
disadvantaged children around the world.
Kids on the Block & Green Kids
As mentioned in our last Newsletter, on October 31 at
9:30 & 10:50 a.m. the Kids on the Block, a life-sized puppet
performance to raise awareness and understanding of people with disabilities
takes place in our gym. On November 2/06, also in CES gym, the Green Kids
will perform a 45 minute play featuring 3 actors who create environmental
awareness for students in a fun and meaningful way. Parents and community
members are welcome to attend.
A Final
Note from KS: Needed, a water pump for a fish aquarium. Call Mrs.
Scott at 745-2623 or drop off at school. Much appreciated! KS
