Wing and a Prayer
Wing
and a Prayer is comprised of three Manitou couples: Dale and Jennifer Dobson, Thor
and Donna Thorleifson, and Bev and Laurie Simpson. Dale and Thor are certified financial planners, Jennifer and
Donna work at Manitou schools, and Bev and Laurie are ordained ministers.
As a group since 1991, they
have had extensive involvement in church and community choirs, music festivals,
coffee houses and events in the Manitou area.
All are members of the CoffeeHouse
Musicians. Further afield, they
have performed at the Pan Am Games. Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre, Grand
Forks Heritage Days, the Morden Back Forty Folk Festival, the Altona Sunflower
Festival, the Gathering of Nations, Cripple Creek Bluegrass Festival, Christmas
at the Legislature, Manitoba War Brides Association, Manitoba Credit Union
Manager’s Convention, Oak Valley Productions, CKY TV ‘s production of
Sundayscope, and at numerous national and provincial church consultations and
events.
They
released their first recording, ‘CoffeeHouse Blend’, in 2000, and their Christmas
Album, ‘To Brighten Up the Winter’s Night’, in 2001.
The
group sings a number of musical styles including folk, sacred/spiritual, lively
‘50’s/’60’s, bluegrass, nonsense songs, and the occasional ‘homemade’ ditty
thrown in.
In
their music, they emphasize the vocal harmonies with simple acapella, guitar,
flute or clarinet accompaniment, enhanced at times with modest percussion.
The
name Wing
and a Prayer seemed a natural choice considering their church and choir connections
~ plus the fact that one member is a licensed pilot.
